The Role of Juries, Including Verdicts
In trial by jury, the case is heard by a judge and jury
– Jury decides guilt/innocence
– Jury Act (1977) NSW
– Jurors are selected from electoral rolls
– Compulsory
– Prosecution and defense may reject jurors
– Majority verdict is 11-1, will only be accepted if the jury has deliberated for at least 8 hours and the court is satisfied Jury Amendments (Majority Verdicts) Act 2006
